Remember at one of our BUM meeting, Kate mentioned a machine that creates 3 dimensional things? You can't remember that far back? Well, here's a video which gives us a bit more info.
Introducing (drum roll ...) The MakerBot Replicator
Using a special software, this 3D printer can create anything from little pendants and rings to life-size rabbits or anything your mind can dream up. How amazing is that! And another cool thing is that one US public library is already making it available to their patrons. Fayette Library launched their CreationLab, offering free access to three of these machines along with other digital media and design software. This particular library's mission is to provide their community access to technologies not currently available to the public. Their aim is to make the library be seen as a place of creation and not just consumption.
At US$1750 a pop, these machines don't come cheap. But think of those creative minds, both young and old, who can come into the library and are free to let their creative juices flow. Budding entrepreneurs, inquisitve students, passionate educators, curious patrons, all have a chance to discover and create.
